weathervane - putting up the tower

Image
The Canadian Tractor Museum has the world’s largest working weathervane with a full size tractor on top. Currently the World record is 49 feet. Ours is 50 feet plus the base. We just need to have someone come and measure it for us and we can submit that along with a small fee to get our weathervane in the Guinness Book of World Records.

When the founding members discussed putting up a sign to attract visitors, they considered making the sign an attraction itself. So they put a full size 1942 Case Model D on top of an old 50 foot smoke stack. It took two cranes, numerous workers and four hours but they did it.

Four pilings go thirty feet in the ground.

Westlock Tractor Parts donated the the tower. It was a smoke stack from Edmonton. Albert Miller donated the tractor. Wabash Mfg Inc. donated the crane and some manpower. And much of the the crane, the cement, the iron and labor was all also donated.

The case Model D is a standard tread tractor that was manufactured from 1939 to 1953. A total of 14,396 tractors were built and at the time, they sold for $2,500.00. It used a 35hp Case engine with a water cooling system.
